Have you been thinking about changing jobs?
Simply thinking about leaving a job can be a sign something is wrong. Unfortunately, many people convince themselves things eventually will get better. Maybe your terrible supervisor will leave? Maybe your workload will become more manageable? Maybe you will get a promotion or a raise? However, as bestselling author Timothy Ferriss asks, “Do you really think it will improve or is it wishful thinking and an excuse for inaction?”
Are you bored with your current position?
A great job should push you, stretch your talents and expand your knowledge. If, on the other hand, you feel as though you have been doing the same tasks since day one, you shouldn’t be surprised if you are unhappy. You may be able to get back on track by having a conversation with your manager about your career path or by volunteering for stretch assignments. In other cases, recognize you may have limited opportunities for growth if you choose to stay where you are.
Do you catch yourself constantly complaining about your job?
Everyone has a bad day at work now and again. But suddenly, ALL your conversations seem to have turned into a rant about your awful job, your horrible boss and your lack of work-life balance. In fact, your friends and family are begging you to talk about something else. It’s time to stop whining and start re-evaluating your situation.
Have you been experiencing health issues that could be work related?
Discontent often leads to physical symptoms. Have you caught more colds and flus recently? Have you had an unusual number of headaches, stomach aches, dizzy spells or other symptoms that may be linked to anxiety? Do you frequently feel stressed out, sad or depressed? Are you having trouble sleeping? Although you always should consult a doctor about any medical concerns, you also may need to ask, “Is my job making me sick?”
Do you have (or could you have) other employment options?
One of the top reasons people stay in dead-end jobs is because they don’t know what else to do. Even if you feel completely stuck, you most likely have more possibilities than you realize. Update your resume, reach out to your network and/or meet with a professional recruiter. You never know what might turn up when you start looking.
If you answered “Yes” to most of the questions above, you probably aren’t where you belong. Your career success and your long-term happiness may depend on you making a change.
